Lightning Protection Standards & Engineering Principles

Our system designs reference applicable national and international standards. Lightning defense relies on atmospheric physics, empirical laboratory testing, and disciplined risk evaluation.
SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

External vs. Internal Lightning Protection

As formulated in IEC 62305-3 and IEC 62305-4, a complete lightning protection system (LPS) is categorized into two complementary domains:

External LPS (Structural Defense)

IEC 62305-3
1. Air-Termination System:Captures direct strikes using rods, catenary conductors, or meshed conductors determined by rolling sphere radius or protection angles.
2. Down-Conductor Network:Directs lightning current safely from roof to earth. Spaced uniformly (e.g. 10m to 20m depending on Class of LPS) to distribute current and minimize magnetic induction.
3. Earth-Termination Grid:Dissipates discharge current into the soil. Requires low overall impedance (recommended ≤ 10 Ohms) to limit dangerous ground potential rise.

Internal LPS (Electronic Defense)

IEC 62305-4
1. Lightning Equipotential Bonding:Interconnecting metallic infrastructure, conduits, and electrical earthing prevents lethal flashovers and sparks caused by potential differences during discharge.
2. Electrical Separation Distance (s):Maintains a calculated minimum air/isolation distance between down-conductors and internal electrical cables to prevent uncontrolled side-flashes through concrete.
3. Coordinated Surge Protection (SPM):Type 1, 2, and 3 surge arresters placed across lightning protection zones (LPZ) suppress conducted surges on power and data lines.
